More than 100 dogs and puppies of all different shapes, sizes, ages and breeds from 11 animal rescue organizations will be onsite available for adoption. The only thing these dogs need is a new home to love and protect them for a lifetime. Plus, our dogs have a money back guarantee and are always welcome back at the shelter or rescue for any reason if it’s not a right fit for your family.

Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week

Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week

Special attention for special adoptable pets

Sept. 19 - 25

Big black dogs. FIV+ cats. Senior pets. Special needs animals.
Many factors can make a pet seem "less adoptable." To promote these
unusual (or, in some cases, too common) animals, Petfinder has designated September 19 - 25 as "Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week."

We asked Petfinder-member shelters and rescue groups to nominate a very special pet in their care who is waiting for a home. Check them out in our gallery, then use our pet-search tool to find a special pet for adoption near you.

Make it your mission to be a Responsi-Bull pit bull owner

Tacoma – Sept. 21, 2010 – Due to the incredible success of the previous offerings of The Responsi-Bull Project, four animal welfare organizations have partnered again to sponsor the program in October to encourage responsible pit bull ownership, and ultimately lower the euthanasia rates of this breed currently facing an epidemic of homeless. A three part program, The Responsi-Bull Project includes free spay and neuter, a free responsible pit bull ownership workshop, and free obedience classes for pit bulls and their owners.
In addition, the Responsi-Bull Project has expanded and is now being offered in both Pierce and Kitsap Counties.
In the early 1900s, the American Pit Bull Terrier was so respected for its loyalty, intelligence and determination that the U.S. military chose an image of this iconic breed to represent our country on war posters. Today, due to irresponsible owners exploiting the very characteristics that once made pit bulls an All-American breed, they have become the most abused and misunderstood dog breed in history.
Despite their top-rated temperaments or their once respected status, pit bulls have become the breed of choice for many irresponsible people, and consequently are flooding animal shelters. An estimated 1/3 of dogs entering our shelters are pit bulls or pit bull mixes, and 90 percent of those dogs will not find a home.
Please see details below for how to sign up.

Part I: Pit-Fix

Beginning October 1st, for a limited time, owners of pit bulls can have their dogs spayed or neutered free of charge at the Coalition: HUMAnE Spay & Neuter Clinic in Tacoma. To schedule an appointment email chappts@yahoo.com or call (253) 627-SPAY. Email preferred. A picture of your dog must be emailed to chappts@yahoo.com or mailed to the clinic to schedule an appointment – Space is limited. The clinic is located at 2106 Tacoma Avenue S., Tacoma, WA 98402.
Residents of Kitsap County should contact the Kitsap Humane Society at http://www.kitsap-humane.org/ or 360-692-6977 for information on how to get their pit bull fixed at no cost.

Part II: Pit-Ed

Do you want to combat the misconceptions about the pit bull breed? Worried about the Breed-Specific Legislation changes proposed in the Puget Sound? Tired of seeing people shy away from your beloved pit bull? Learn the “do’s and don’ts” of owning this amazing breed and help restore its family dog image. Attend a free Responsible Pit Bull Ownership Workshop hosted by BullsEye Dog Rescue on Sunday, Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., held at Play Bow Dog Training located at 2108 Tacoma Ave S., Tacoma, WA 98402. Space is limited, so register now by visiting our online registration form at http://www.bullseyerescue.org/responsibullsignup.htm.
Residents of Kitsap County should contact Stacey at smoody@kitsap-humane.org for more information on the workshop and training offerings.

Part III: Train-A-Pit

Play Bow Dog Training and BullsEye Dog Rescue have teamed up to offer a four week basic obedience class for pit bulls that is free to those who complete the class. You will be asked to pay a $40 registration fee and every week you attend you will receive $10 back. Attend all 4 classes and the class is free (normally a $150 value). Classes will be offered Saturday afternoons starting Oct. 16. Don’t miss this great opportunity to teach your dog new tricks. Contact Lorrie at lorrie@bullseyerescue.org to register. Space is limited, so register now by visiting our online registration form at http://www.bullseyerescue.org/responsibullsignup.htm.

This Is Koby And He's Just Been Put On The Manhattan Euth List For Tomorrow! What A Mushface!

This Is Koby And He's Just Been Put On The Manhattan Euth List For Tomorrow! What A Mushface!

KOBY #A867838. Koby is a male b&w American Shorthair/mix. The shelter thinks he's about 2 years old. He came into the shelter as a stray on 07/20/2010, owner surrender, reason stated was stray. Koby is very sweet but his behavior was marked severe when he first arrived. That has changed dramatically! He's a sugarboy now! Another person noted the same thing on his kennel card. He needs to be re-evaluated but there's no more time now.
Koby is on a 24 hour reprieve from death's door. I'm sorry to put it that way but it's true. If you want to foster or adopt him, please contact Eva Prokop at: Evapro101@gmail.com. Thank you!

Tuffy a Domestic Medium Hair Cat is available for adoption!

Kitsap Humane Society

Tuffy a Domestic Medium Hair Cat is available for adoption!
http://www.petfinder.com/

Tuffy is approximately 5 years old, is neutered and microchipped. Tuffy is in need of a special family as he is FIV+ (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). Tuffy is an absolute sweetheart, he is very gentle, affectionate, friendly, and loves sitting on laps. Due to his FIV status, he needs to be the only cat in the household and must be 100% indoors only. FIV+ cats can often live many years when kept in optimum health and will require a high quality diet as well as regular veterinary examinations and care (incl. vaccinations and flea control), *Please be aware that FIV is not contagious to humans, dogs, or any non-feline animal. Tuffy came to the shelter injured and it is believed that he may have been hit by a car. His wounds are healing, although he is still a bit "beat up" looking, but you would never know what a hard time he has had by his behavior. He was named Tuffy because of his brave and loving spirit, despite the hardships he has obviously endured before winding up here. I watched him yesterday as he sat on the lap of a child who is a volunteer "cat cuddler" in the cat room as she stroked and talked to him. I have never seen a cat so clearly blissful and adoring of a human; his eyes were partly closed, his head was arched back so he could gaze at her face, his body was totally relaxed and absolute joy and contentment simply emanated from every part of him. This is clearly a cat that will be totally devoted to someone who will love him. He deserves a special person who will be totally devoted to him in return.
Please come and meet Tuffy at the Kitsap Humane Society; open 7 days a week. Adoption hours are noon to 5 p.m., http://www.kitsap-humane.org/, 360-692-6977.
Kitsap Humane Society still has many "Twilight Cats" greatly in need of homes

Adopt a Pet :: Murphy - Bellevue, WA - Domestic Shorthair

Adopt a Pet :: Murphy - Bellevue, WA - Domestic Shorthair

Murphy's story...

Murphy is a charming older gentleman in search of a new home. With his brown tabby coat that is soft and sleek to the touch, this guy will curl up on a warm lap and purr. Murphy is very tolerant of dogs, but would prefer to be the only cat in the home. Could you give him the retirement home he deserves? Some shelters do not consider pets over 3-years-old adoptable, but we know that Murph Man is an affectionate and well-mannered cat who would bring smiles to someone's life. We will give him all the time he needs to find the right home willing to meet his special needs.
As with all of our cats, Murphy has been neutered, microchipped, dewormed and vaccinated. All of our cats have been tested for Feline Leukemia/FIV and go home with a certificate for an examination by a King County veterinarian and their very own collar and identification tag.
Murphy is currently being cared for in a foster home. Please do not hesitate to contact us to set up a meeting with him! Jennifer Juroch, our Cat Foster Coordinator, can be reached at 425-641-0080, ext. 132.

There is help available to help you pay vet bills

An unexpected illness or injury to your pet could lead to veterinary bills in the thousands of dollars, leaving you struggling to find a way to pay them. But don’t despair, there is help available.
I know, it happened to me. A couple of years ago my cat Bonehead was diagnosed with bone cancer. My first question was “Can it be treated?” After discussing the treatment options, my next question was “How much will it cost?” I was taken aback when the costs were explained. I found myself wondering if I could even afford it. Luckily I was able to cobble together what I needed with money from a savings account, money from a retirement account, and using credit cards to get Bonehead the treatment.
But others may not be as fortunate when it comes to access to cash or credit, leaving the needed treatment out of reach. But there are things they can do and places to which they can turn for help.
These are some of the things I learned when dealing with Bonehead’s cancer - they can serve as a starting point to help you get your pet the treatment it needs.
The first thing you should do personal inventory to determine what you’d be able to pay toward the treatment. How much can you afford to take out of your savings? Do you have access to a retirement account and what are the penalties for early withdrawal? Do you have access to credit? Would family or friends be able to assist you? You need to keep in mind the long-term impacts of your choices - for example, if you max out your credit cards, will you be able to afford the monthly payments? Or if you use all of you savings, what will you do if your car breaks down or a family members becomes ill. Look at you current monthly budget. Are there areas where you can make cuts or is there room for additional payments?
The next thing you should do is talk to your vet. Explain you financial situation and ask if they can offer a payment plan or financing. My vet wasn’t able to provide a payment plan, but he did suggest that I consider getting a Care Credit card. Care Credit is accepted by many veterinarians and offers no-interest and low monthly payment options. I applied and was approved the same day, which is important in cases of emergency. If your vet doesn’t offer financing or payment options, you can also call around to other veterinarians in your area to see if they may have them available. Your vet may also be able to suggest local organizations that might be able to assist you in getting you pet the needed care.
The next step is to go online. The are a multitude of organizations that will help pay for the care your pet needs. These are just a few that might be able to assist you:

Help-A-Pet
www.help-a-pet.org
Established in 1999, HELP-A-PET is a nonprofit organization with a single purpose: to provide financial assistance nationwide for the medical care of pets whose owners are unable to afford the expense.

In Memory of Magic - IMOM.org
www.imom.org
"Helping people help pets". To better the lives of sick, injured and abused companion animals. We are dedicated to insure that no companion animal has to be euthanized simply because their caretaker is financially challenged.

The Pet Fund
http://thepetfund.com
The Pet Fund is a registered 501(c) 3 nonprofit association that provides financial assistance to owners of domestic animals who need veterinary care. Often animals are put down or suffer needlessly because their owners cannot afford expensive surgery or medical treatment. Companion animal owners must often make the difficult decision to put an animal down or neglect medical needs because of the costs involved.

The Humane Society of the United States
The Humane Society of the United States’ Web site is a great resource. It has a variety of lists of organizations willing and able to help. Check out the Humane Society’s Web site at http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_veterinary_care.html.

So if you pet becomes ill, or is injured, you have resources available to help you ensure it receives the care it needs.
